Job Scope/Duties:
The Captain is the manager of the entire vessel tow and represents the company in all interactions. With their crew, they are the primary link between the company and the customer, and should always uphold the highest standards. A skilled Captain can overcome most obstacles at the terminals and leave a favorable impression.
Key responsibilities include:
- Demonstrating proficiency in boat handling and working with outside staff to maintain standards.
- Operating all equipment safely and efficiently, in accordance with regulations.
- Maintaining the company-issued Guide Box and accurately recording refueling in the appropriate fuel log.
- Completing all trip paperwork per company policy.
- Ensuring preparedness for trips, including arriving 30 minutes early and maintaining a clean uniform and safety equipment.
- Communicating operational incidents to the Director of Program Operations.
- Handling materials required for the job and maneuvering in small or confined areas within the vessel.
- Providing safe and outstanding on-water experiences, balancing nature, culture, history education, and sport-specific techniques.
Principal Responsibilities:
- Ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the crew, vessel, and tow.
- Enforcing company policies, rules, and regulations.
- Conducting monthly drills and safety meetings.
- Acting as the designated vessel security officer under the Vessel Security Plan.
- Supporting the Crew Endurance Management System.
- Participating in performance evaluations, supervisory duties, and budget management.
- Maintaining radio watch and assisting in engine room care and maintenance.
- Assigning tasks to the mate and/or lead deckhand.
- Managing the vessel budget to maximize cost efficiency.
Work History/Experience:
- Minimum of 3 years of experience as a U.S.C.G. MOTV licensed Captain with towing and endorsements for Western Rivers, Oceans, and/or Near Coastal waters.
- Captains who have operated more than 2 different vessels are highly desired
- Extensive knowledge of the Lower Mississippi River, from Baton Rouge to Venice, LA, and the New Orleans harbor, including locks, docks, and fleets.
Physical and Mental Requirements:
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, rotate, reach, and lift materials weighing up to 75 lbs.
- Ability to ascend/descend stairs or ladders safely and maintain balance.
- Vision correctable to 20/40 with full color vision and no night blindness.
- Capability to perform emergency duties as listed in the vessel s station bill.
Requirements:
- Valid U.S.C.G. MOTV Captains License with towing and endorsements for Western Rivers, Oceans, and/or Near Coastal waters.
- Radar Observer Unlimited endorsement, FCC License, and a valid TWIC card.
- Must pass a pre-employment physical, drug screen, and alcohol test.
Shifts/Hours:
Schedule varies: 20 days on / 10 days off or 28 days on / 14 days off.
Pay: $660-$725 per day (Up to $5075 with 7 days)
Benefits Offered: Health insurance available after 60 days.
